After a big July for Disney+ that brought original content including the smash hit ‘Hamilton’, Disney+ heads into August with some new fans and are bringing some great films and TV shows to the platform next month. As we noted earlier this week, Alan Menken achieved EGOT status with his Daytime Emmy win on Sunday. Coming on August 7th, Disney+ will explore the life and career of Howard Ashman, Menken’s partner in crime in the 80s and 90s on a few Disney classics in their original documentary, ‘Howard’.
Spanning his childhood in Baltimore, to his formative years in New York, and his untimely death due to AIDS, “Howard” goes in-depth to explore his journey to become the lyricist behind some of the most beloved and well-known classic family films in the world. (WhatsOnDisneyPlus)
Another film we discussed earlier this month, The One and Only Ivan will hit the streaming service on August 14th. The film features Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie and Danny DaVito and is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by K.A. Applegate. Although the story is completely fictional, it is inspired by the true story of Ivan, a western lowland gorilla who lived in a similar situation for 27 years.
The August release for Disney+ also includes further episodes of some of the various original TV series available on the platform as well as some fan favorites including X-Men, Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Greatest Showman and Fantastic Four as well as some interesting documentaries (Back To The Titanic, Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge: Adventure Awaits) and brings the live-action 2017 remake of Beauty And The Beast to Disney+.
