This morning, the trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon premiered on Good Morning America. The film was originally supposed to be released on November 25th, 2020, but was pushed back to March 12th, 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The premise of the film is described by Walt Disney Animation Studios is as follows:
Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the last dragon in order to finally stop the Druun for good. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than dragon magic to save the world—it’s going to take trust as well.
Raya and the Last Dragon will star Awkwafina as the voice of Sisu and Kelly Marine Tran as Raya. Tran previously portrayed Rose Tico in Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX.
Promotional images for the film and the trailer note that Walt Disney Animation Studios is aiming for a theatrical release in March. Most theaters around the country are still closed, but hopefully Disney will be able to safely release the film into theaters.
