Disney fans, the unthinkable is happening…Disney is redoing Splash Mountain, with a Princess and the Frog makeover! The announcement comes after petitions were passed around the internet, asking Disney to change the theme from the ride’s current theme, Song of the South.
Song of the South is a Disney film from 1946, that has been a source of controversy for its racist portrayal of the African American characters. The film is so controversial, that Disney has largely kept it hidden away from the world. As conversations of race are on the forefront of everyone’s minds right now, fans had asked Disney to replace the ride with a new theme, specifically The Princess and the Frog, a film that portrays Disney’s first African American Princess.
The new ride, which will be redone at both Disneyland and Disney World, will focus on Princess Tiana and Louis, as they go on an adventure getting ready for Mardi Gras. According to Disney, the ride has actually been in the works since last year, and will focus on celebrating the inclusivity of all Disney fans. Says Disney: “The new concept is inclusive – one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.”
Although fans are sad that the popular ride will be getting a rehaul, its nice that Disney will be focusing on giving Princess Tiana the recognition she deserves.
