Mulan‘s release has been repeatedly pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of continuing to wait for a theatrical release, Walt Disney Pictures decided to make the film available to stream. Here’s what you need to know about this unconventional blockbuster release:

Disney+ subscribers can pay $29.99 for early-access

Beginning on September 4th, those who have Disney+ can pay an additional $29.99 for access to the film. This fee is on top of the $6.99-per month subscription. Mulan can be purchased directly on disneyplus.com. The title is already listed on the service as ‘coming soon’.

The “Premier Access” grants the user access to the film before it’s released on the platform for all subscribers. Disney has not yet announced the date to which this access will be granted.

You don’t have to subscribe to Disney+ to watch

Other streaming services and distributors will also have the film available to purchase. Mulan will be available to purchase on Apple, Google, and Roku for the same $29.99 price.

Once you purchase it, it’s in your library

Purchasing the “Premier Access” for Mulan means that the film will stay in your streaming library. You can watch it as many times as you’d like. It’s not a rental where you only have a certain amount of time to watch it.

This is something new for Disney. Disney’s decision has been met with backlash from fans who argue that the price is too high for a film being released digitally. Others insist that they shouldn’t have to pay extra to watch Mulan when they already have a Disney+ subscription. These arguments do make sense, but it’s up to the individual if purchasing the early access is something they’d like to do. Yes, the film will eventually be available on Disney+ for all subscribers, but there is no timetable to when this would occur.

Either way, Mulan will hit Disney+ on September 4th!
