The Hong Kong Disneyland Resort today announced that it will close its doors to all visitors on January 7, 2022. The move came as a result of an increase of COVID-19 infections in the area, prompting the Disney Park to close for at least two weeks.
The Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, which includes Hong Kong Disneyland Park and hotels such as Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Hollywood Hotel, and Disney Explorers Lodge, is located near Penney’s Bay on Lantau Island. The Disney Park was the second expansion into Asia after Tokyo Disney Resort opened many years earlier. Disneyland Park in Hong Kong was inspired by Walt Disney’s original theme park, Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and incorporates Disney characters, popular rides, and fireworks displays. The popular theme park destination will now close for an extended length of time.
While the news currently states the Disney Resort will be closed for 14 days, the current Hong Kong Disneyland Park calendar has blocked out all forthcoming dates, suggesting that the Disney vacation spot will only reopen as and when it is deemed safe to do so.
This protracted closure comes only weeks after the Disney Park was forced to close abruptly when government officials ordered all visitors and Cast Members to take an antigen test upon leave, causing Guests to queue for hours. The one-day shutdown turned into several days, yet the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort was able to reopen quickly.
