This morning, The Mandalorian creator and executive producer Jon Favreau appeared on Good Morning America to discuss the Season 2 finale and explain what exactly The Book of Boba Fett is.
Favreau explained that The Book of Boba Fett will be separate from Season 3 of The Mandalorian. The first episode of Season 3 is slated for a Christmas Day premiere. There’s no shortage of work to be done since The Book of Boba Fett is currently in production while The Mandalorian is in pre-production.
But why keep the show a secret until the Season 2 finale after Disney announced 10 new Star Wars projects on their 2020 Investors Day? Well, Favreau emphasized that his team wanted to hold the announcement back as to no spoil the Season 2 finale and keep the reveal a surprise.
Temuera Morrison will continue his role of Boba Fett. Ming-Na Wen will also reprise her role as Fennec Shand.
The following section contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale.
In the interview, Favreau also discussed how hard it was to keep the secret of Luke Skywalker being the Jedi to answer Grogu’s (Baby Yoda) call. He said he was scared the secret would come out because the show had already had some of its castings leaked. He likened keeping Luke’s cameo a secret to the surprise unveiling Grogu appearing at the end of Season one’s first episode.
Favreau explained, “We started off the whole series with the Baby Yoda reveal, that was a secret that everybody was really blown away by. Part of that is not telling too many people and not having merchandise being tooled up.“
Basically, it was nowhere near easy keeping these major plot points hidden from fans before their episodes aired.
