Over the weekend, Disney dropped a new short, “Out.” The tiny graphic associated with the film leaves a lot to the imagination, but once you start watching it, be prepared to grab the tissues. I wont give anything away, but the film focuses on Greg, a young man who is keeping a very big secret from his family, and his dog Jim, who does what he thinks is best for his owner. In true Disney Short film fashion, goofiness ensues, and though the film is very predictable, there is a cute little twist that put a smile on my face. If you’re looking for a pick me up, this short is the perfect, feel – good moment you need.
Although Disney has dabbled in having LGBTQ characters in the past, the characters are often minor characters, and their sexuality is often ambiguous. By featuring a same sex couple, and having that be the focus of their story, Disney has opened up the doors to more inclusivity going forward, a move that makes me very happy. If you haven’t watched it yet, I suggest you do, and if you have, share it with all your friends!
