Just Disney

Quasimodo is heading (back) to the screen. Disney has lined up its next live-action reimagination of one of its animated favorites; according to Deadline, a new adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is in the works.

David Henry Hwang, the Tony-winning playwright of M. Butterfly, is attached to write the script, with musical theatre composers Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz—who wrote songs for the 1996 animated movie—teaming up once again. Among the producers is Tony nominee Josh Gad (who appeared in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast); no word yet on if he would also star.

The new movie will lift from Disney's earlier film and Victor Hugo's original novel, as has been the case for the studio's recent remakes. It will likely not feature material from the stage adaptation.

Hunchback joins a bevy of other familiar Disney titles getting the big screen treatment once again. Premiering this year are Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King, with Mulan, Pinocchio, and The Little Mermaid (with Lin-Manuel Mirandaattached) also in the works.
