2021 Marathon Weekends Switched to Virtual

Disney this year is different. Although Disney is still hosting most of their events, they’re doing them all differently. First it was Halloween, then Christmas, now the 2021 marathon weekends.

Although the parks are open, runDisney is moving the 2021 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and 2021 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend to virtual events.

runDisney Statement

“During this unusual time, race organizers around the world continue to pause on hosting in-person race events that draw large crowds. As we look at the 2021 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and 2021 Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, we will convert both of these races to virtual events, similar to our offering for the 2020 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend.

While we share our Guests’ disappointment that we will not be running together in person, we have based this decision on the unique circumstances of hosting a road race experience on this scale under the current environment.”

If you’ve already signed up, and no longer want to participate, runDisney is offering a full refund. However, if you have a US mailing address, you can convert your registration to the virtual race. This allows you to run anywhere you’d like! If you still want to run, you’ll get a medal for each distance you compete in. You can also purchase an optional race shirt. Those still registered received instructions today. You must make your selection before October 7. In addition, if you would like to register to run, additional spots open tomorrow at 10am EST. For those no longer interested in running, you can request a refund from runDisney to your original form of payment. Refunds will be processed by mid – November.

Although it’s an unfortunate turn of events, we’re glad Disney is prioritizing the health and safety of the racers. A virtual option, although it may not be for everyone, allows for more runners than if the event was still held at Disney. For more details, you can go to the runDisney website.

Will you be running one of the virtual races? Let us know!
